Wasting Time figure ensuite au catalogue WarinD. ──────────────────── SUMATRA — FROM THE DANCEFLOOR TO THE DECKS ENGLISH In November 2024, Sumatra goes to hear Kobosil at a Noreiner event. He leaves wanting to produce again. He has drifted away from making music; that night brings back the reason he started. He also names Chlär’s set at Ärder, on 21 December 2024 at NWHR, as a turning point. His return begins on the dancefloor. Before Montréal, there is Sept-Îles. Electronic music first reaches him through the Daniel Desnoyers compilations his parents play in the car. Around eighteen, he starts organising raves with friends. With few local opportunities to hear the music they love, they make their own. DJing and production follow, driven by a straightforward desire to share it. The name Sumatra is already part of his life. A longtime gaming handle, it reflects his fascination with biology, wildlife and the Indonesian island’s biodiversity. When he needs an artist name, he keeps it. Behind the blackletter identity is a curiosity about the living world. One track connects those early years to his later releases. In an interview with Le Nord-Côtier, he describes starting No Sleep Protocol in 2012 and returning to it years later. He credits the finished track with securing his first label deal. Luck Is All I Got was released on DSR Digital on 28 November 2025, with David Temessi credited on Going Back and Gonzo on Bottle Service. Wasting Time appears on WarinD. These records offer milestones; his answers to Looply reveal the intention behind them. Sumatra places his sound between schranz and hardgroove. He describes percussion, fast rhythms and layered sounds that can become almost hypnotic. Kobosil, In Verruf, Somewhen and Rikhter are among the influences he names. Asked about performing, though, he returns to the people in front of him: he wants to experience the moment with the crowd. His relationship with Noreiner eventually comes full circle. Having rediscovered his desire to create at one of their events, he later plays for the collective at Piknic Électronik, with friends and family there to see him. In the answers he sends us, gratitude is as prominent as the performance itself. That outlook also shapes what he wants next. He believes in sharing knowledge, contacts and opportunities, and wants to help Montréal artists reach further. He is quick to acknowledge the people who have opened doors for him. Upcoming projects will be revealed when they are ready. What he is willing to say now is how he hopes to be remembered: as someone who helped another artist move forward. / Based on Sumatra’s written answers and clarifications from his team.
